Flawesome Award

Flawesome Award for Emily Mae Hood

“It’s time to celebrate the flaws that make you awesome.

How many times do we see an award that celebrates all things bright and shiny and sunny in a person? How often do we forget that our weaknesses can be a strength? Our flaws make us human, our flaws tell us more about who we are, and in turn we turn those flaws into awesome strengths. In short, our flaws make us #flawesome.”— Sophia Ismaa

How am I so lucky to have so many supportive friends in the writing community? This celebratory award is right up my alley, celebrating my flaws. I have always believed in the balance of the universe and have tried to achieve a balance in my own personal life. Our strengths are our weaknesses, yet weakness can be strength. So very zen.

Thank You

Just a few of my flaws…

Flaw #1– I’m not a morning person

My daily routine forces me to wake up and get out to work very early in the morning and I hate it. It is absolute torture to motivate myself, but I do it. I have limited patience and very little desire to “doll” myself up for the office. How can I turn this flaw into a positive?

I believe the mere fact that I am not a morning person, but I manage a hefty morning ritual before I even arrive at work, shows a tremendous amount of self discipline. My morning routine includes social media posts, breakfast, cleaning the dishes, feeding and walking the dogs, and getting myself and my son ready to go out the door—all by 6:30am. Self discipline is an essential character trait for someone who is self employed (which I have been) or someone who is building their blog and social media platform to become self employed (which I’m working towards).

Flaw #2– I take on too much

I was born in the Year of the Rat with clearly undiagnosed ADHD and a confirmed Type-A personality (ask anyone who knows me). This is a recipe for “taking on too much”. At least once per month I feel overwhelmed with an onset of crippling anxiety because of the tasks and goals I’ve committed to. I would like to additionally blame this on a higher IQ that gets bored easily and thrives on solving complicated conundrums. I just can’t stop myself! How can I turn this flaw into a positive?

I would not have achieved everything in my life so successfully if I wasn’t the aforementioned crazy person described. I’m proud of my accomplishments and I have lived the equivalent of several lifetimes. I can’t wait to see what the next decade brings.

Flaw #3– I don’t care to be rich

pile of dollar bills

In the capitalist country I call home money is omnipotent. However, other than living a healthy life I am not moved by thoughts of an excessive income. I have seen first hand the indulgence and greed of the 1% and I find it distasteful. Don’t get me wrong; I love my home and capitalism is theoretically wonderful, but greed is difficult to control and it has taken over. If I had excessive income I would reinvest it into the lives of people who need a little lift to overcome poverty and live their own healthy lives. How is this really a flaw?

In the case of being self-employed in America you need to have a desire to want to make money. I am more motivated by my talent and passions than the chance to become a millionaire. This is not to say that I would be sad if I were offered a hefty sum for my talents and knowledge; I just don’t want to sacrifice my integrity or lie to people to achieve this goal. In the end, I believe this is a strength because I am more motivated to produce solid work that continually improves with my growth and, in turn, will hopefully help others.
