Axe Throwing! in Brooklyn, NY

Two Viking costumed at Kick Axe Throwing

Our family loves to find new and exciting things to do and axe throwing really caught our attention. All of us have had prior experience throwing axes, believe it or not, through Renaissance Festival games and some crazy family martial art antics (don’t judge!). When we heard there was a place in New York City that would allow us to throw axes, we could not resist! We booked a session at Kick Axe Throwing right away.

What to expect

The instructors at Kick Axe teach you the basics of axe handling and throwing for the first 10-15 minutes of your session. Once you understand the basics, you get to compete against one another in axe throwing games. The instructor stays with you the entire time and really helps everyone keep up the pace and motivation. They also help with additional instruction when needed and keeping score. There are two different axe sizes available and foam axes are available upon request if you’re concerned about your throwing skills.

Food

This business serves food and alcohol. It has a bar set up, lounge area and additional tables and seats. We went as a family and hung out in the lounge with comfortable couch seating while we waited. This is not a restaurant, so food is more along snacks and late night fillers.

You can order food to enjoy right at your axe throwing area. They offer a Lumberjack Pie 10″ coal pizza among other simple snack foods.

Facilities

We visited Kick Axe as a family. The bar is a separate area from the lounge and axe throwing. This set up helps separate the customers who are visiting for the recreation (like us) or the visitors who want to include social drinking to their experience.

We made use of the lounge during our wait time for our axe throwing session. There are a variety of table games to keep you busy–Jenga, giant Connect Four and more. It’s a comfy lodge atmosphere with interesting decor. If you really want to complete the experience, wear your best plaid.

Family Adventure Rating 3

Cost– This adventure can add up. It’s $35 plus tax per person plus food and travel. A family or group of five will cost $190.00 plus food and travel. We find food in the city can really increase adventure costs. Research the area and pick one place to have a solid meal at that is in your price range and avoid street vendor stops (they seem inexpensive, but really add up at the end of the day). Mass transit is your best option to get to this location, so look for bundles and group transit discounts.

Parking & Transportation– Mass transit is your best bet with Brooklyn. Parking is near impossible and could add quite a bit of stress to your adventure, especially if you factor in traffic and congestion. You will find buses, subways, and ride shares easily accessible to Kick Axe Throwing.

From their website—The closest train stations are:

  • F/G Line to Bergen Street
  • A/C Line to Hoyt Street-Schermerhorn
  • D/N/R Line to Atlantic Avenue / Barclays Center

E8217D55-D179-493C-A852-208C84D55E2FLocation– Brooklyn is a really diverse and interesting area to explore. There is so much entertainment and culture here, you can easily find an adventure. Kick Axe is located really close to Park Slope which has its own community and lots to do. This is a great location to get into and create an awesome adventure.

Day Trip or Overnight– This is a day trip, but you can easily find accommodations to stay in New York City and combine this with other great adventures. (Directly from the Kick Axe website: “The Union Hotel is right across the street! The Fairfield Inn and Suites is about a block away as the axe flies!”)

Experience– This adventure is all about fun. We love going into the city to find new and interesting things. There was something about throwing axes in the city that really appealed to us. We had thrown axes before, but it’s rare that the opportunity presents itself. Our family also has a competitive drive, so adding games to the axe throwing really supercharged the experience for us.

Combination– Brooklyn is a large borough of New York City. The Park Slope area has some awesome attractions– Brooklyn Botanical Gardens ; Prospect Park Zoo ; go for a walk and marvel at the Brownstone Houses right next to Prospect ParkBarclays CenterBrooklyn Museum (their MET); and 5th Avenue in Brooklyn is the heart of Park Slope with many restaurants, cafes, bars and shops. You can also venture a little further… Brooklyn Bridge (30 minute walk), Coney Island (30 minute drive).
