Santa’s Christmas Tree Farm

Santa’s Christmas Tree Farm is one of our favorite family traditions. This 23 acre farm is filled with everything you could want for a festive family experience. You are free to walk the grounds and enjoy your time. There are live deer that the kids can feed, free hayrides around the fields (or to your tree destination), and the best Santa we have ever encountered. They also offer pony rides, face painting, a small playground and balloon making. You can even bring your family pet if he’s friendly and leashed.

Visit Santa beginning Thanksgiving weekend through Christmas on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm. He’s located inside the store past the main room. Don’t forget to bring a camera for photos. Santa enjoys speaking to the kids and has been known to take topic requests (being specific really keeps the kids guessing). Don’t take our word about him being the best, he has been featured on Good Morning America! (If you find him, you can also take pictures with the 15 ft. Rudolph the red nose reindeer.) There’s no charge!

Their 2,500+ square ft. store is filled with a variety of holiday items. They hand-make wreaths, blankets, kissing balls, pillows and swags. They have a large selection of ribbons, bows and decorators to create custom pieces. They also carry a wide selection of gifts and ornaments (our favorite), as well as candles and decorations. On the weekends, they have a local artist who will personalize your ornaments.  A personal favorite is the blank wreaths that they will decorate for you with the ribbons and decor that you pick out to customize to your taste and home.

The store is open 7 days a week through January from 10am-dusk.

Inside the store you can also find a nice snack to get you warm before or after your tree hunt. Available for purchase- $2.00 hot chocolate with whip cream (FREE refills) $2.00 popcorn (FREE refills).

The fields of trees (45,000!) are sectioned by variety (including Douglas Fir, Concolor Fir, Blue Spruce) and go all the way back, deep into the farm. The yearly plantings are rotated to ensure a full and healthy variety to pick from. You can walk or wait for the “hayride” to bring you around, but dress in layers. It can get cold in the field if it’s windy or overcast, not to mention it is winter. After you select and cut your tree, you can warm up by the large fire ring on the center path in the field. All trees are $85.00 for up to 15 ft. unless otherwise marked.  That’s a bargain!

**Special Note

Santa’s Christmas Tree Farm recently acquired new owners. I tried to get information to update this post as accurately as possible, but they were very busy with the start of the new season after just having acquired the property. We visited on Opening Weekend. Much of the farm and its amenities are the same, but you may experience some subtle differences. Call ahead if you have any questions. The old website is the only source of information currently online, but it is not their website so it’s not 100% accurate. I’ve added some new pictures to the post from our most recent visit.

Family Adventure Rating ♥♥♥♥

Cost– Most trees are $85 regardless of size. They do have some select specialty tress that increase the price. Activities are free. They sell popcorn and hot cocoa for a couple of dollars. They have a very ice ornament shop that could cost you some money. They also have wreaths that you can buy plain, pre-made, or decorate yourself with their custom shop. We typically spend a little over $150 every time we go.

Parking & Transportation– There is free parking on the property. During the busy holiday weekends it gets a little chaotic, but seems to work out fine.  People don’t usually overstay their welcome.

Location– Coming from the westernmost part of Suffolk County, this is a hike with a tree on your car roof. This trip is best if you’re within a personally acceptable distance to travel with the tree. There are some terrific things to do in the area, so you could make this a pit stop to make it worth your while.

Day Trip or Overnight– If you’re picking out a Christmas Tree, you’re probably going to want to make this a day trip. You’ll need to get home quick to get that tree in water and you’ll want to decorate it while you have the day off!

Experience– This is a nice wholesome experience for a family. Being outdoors, picking your own tree, cutting it, visiting reindeer, going for a tractor ride, is all part of the experience. It’s always a treat when everyone in the family participates in the festivities and preparation!

Combination– You can easily combine this with shopping, food, or a park in the area. Some areas of interest are: Greenport, The Big Duck, and Horton’s Point Lighthouse. You may also enjoy Tanger Outlets in Riverhead and many of the wineries that are home to the North Fork.
